The King of Spain highlights IFMIF-DONES as a “major work project”

The King of Spain, Felipe VI, described the particle accelerator in Escúzar (Granada) as a “major global project” during the presentation of the Rei Jaume I Awards, which took place in Valencia last November.

DONES Steering Committee supports the ramp-up of the IFMIF-DONES international team

The second DONES Steering Committee, the highest governing body of the DONES Fusion Programme, has met in Granada on 26th October to review the progress of the programme, in particular the results of the panel of independent experts that analysed the current state of the DONES baseline.

On 19th and 20th October, the Science Park in Granada hosted the 'Second DONES Users Workshop', which was attended by a hundred scientists and technicians from 17 different countries. The scientific meeting of the "DONES Users" aims to be repeated on an annual basis.

A delegation from the National Institutes for Quantum and Radiological Science and Technology (QST), including Atsushi Kasugai, visited the site where the particle accelerator will be built in Escúzar (Granada) past October.

CERN hosted the presentation of the IFMIF-DONES facility and its diagnostic systems during the Hadron Beams Workshop this past October. This biennial symposium brought together experts from the world’s foremost particle accelerators and high-power targets.

IFMIF-DONES celebrates the commissioning of the “sister project” JT-60SA

The fusion energy sector reached its latest major milestone on 1 December with the inauguration in Japan of the JT-60SA , the world's largest and most advanced tokamak fusion reactor. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Kadri Simson, EU Commissioner for Energy, and Masahito Moriyama, Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, together with a host of Japanese and European authorities, including our Director, Ángel Ibarra.

Eurofusion’s international meeting in Toledo on IFMIF-DONES

The University of Castilla-La Mancha (UCLM) held a technical meeting on 23 and 24 November at the Toledo Campus within the framework of the European programme for the development of nuclear fusion atomic energy, Eurofusion (Early Neutron Source work package).

The University of Granada and IFMIF-DONES España Consortium receive the first prototype particle accelerator

The MuVacAS (Multipurpose Vacuum Accident Scenarios) facility, a scale prototype of the last 30 metres of the particle accelerator’s vacuum chambers, has been received by the University of Granada and the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium.

IFMIF-DONES plans to start the licensing process for its facilities in 2026

The Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) hosted the liaison committee meeting with representatives of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility and Demonstration Oriented Neutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) project. The project representatives presented the start-up strategy to the regulator during the meeting. They plan to apply for licensing of their first facilities in June 2026 and commissioning three years later.

A European project will boost the expansion of the scientific community using DONES

Ten European organisations have launched the DONES-ConP1 project, funded by the European Commission. The project aims to expand the DONES user community and strengthen partners’ participation in the programme.

IFMIF-DONES “humanises” artificial intelligence

Our Deputy Director, Moisés Weber, has spoken at Andalusia’s 1st Artificial Intelligence Congress, held on 22 and 23 November at the Palacio de Congresos de Granada. During his conference, entitled “IFMIF-DONES, in your image and likeness”, he presented the strategy of IFMIF-DONES in artificial intelligence.

Raúl is the name of the virtual partner of the team of people working on IFMIF-DONES. His public presentation occurred during the conference given by José Aguilar, coordinator of the Technical Office, at Talking about Artificial Intelligence (#TAIGranada), held last past November in Granada.

IFMIF-DONES, in the Science Week

IFMIF-DONES participated for the second consecutive year in Science Week, the largest annual scientific dissemination event at the European level. The Faculty of Science of the University of Granada hosted this new edition on 6 November.

We participated in the Flag Day, organised by the Red Cross

On 26 October, several members of our team participated in the Flag Day, organised by the Granada Red Cross. Numerous groups of young people passed by the IFMIF-DONES stand, accompanied by Red Cross volunteers.

The ‘DONES runners’ team participated yesterday in the Granada Red Cross Run, organised in collaboration with the Granada City Council Sports Department and sponsored by the Fundación Caja Rural de Granada.

Interview with Santiago Becerril, Coordinator of the Test Systems Area

Santiago Becerril (Barcelona, 1975) is an Industrial Engineer, specialising in Machine Mechanics, from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. During his career at IFMIF-DONES, since March 2021, he has accumulated responsibility in various aspects of the project. Among the most important, the coordination of the Test Systems Area, which is one of the largest that will make up the plant.
