IFMIF-DONES, an example of science diplomacy
Posted on |
The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant, has stated that consolidating the ‘powerful bridge between science and politics is more important than ever, in the midst of a global ecological and digital transformation, and in the face of the reactionary wave of disinformation, hoaxes and scientific denialism, which is advancing in the world and which we know kills’.
Morant stated this during the opening of the IX Meeting of Spanish Science, Technology and Innovation Diplomacy, organised by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (MICIU) through the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation (MAUEC), and the Network of Associations of Spanish Researchers and Scientists Abroad (RAICEX), at the headquarters of the Ramón Areces Foundation. The event took place on 19 December.

During the event, Morant also highlighted the scientific and technological milestones with an international dimension that ‘place us in new areas of European leadership and advance a Spain that is cohesive with its territories’.
In this regard, she referred to the buildings of the Iberian Energy Storage Research Centre being built in Cáceres; the international IFMIF-DONES project for the development of fusion energy technologies that is progressing in Escúzar (Granada); the new Supercomputer 5 in Barcelona and the IMEC in Malaga, with which Spain is prepared to drive Europe forward in the global competition for chips; among other examples.

During this event, the director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, Ángel Ibarra, made a presentation of the project to the audience. The event is attended every year by the presidents of the associations of scientists abroad, which, under the umbrella of RAICEX, now total 22 associations around the world.
