Strong institutional support reaffirmed at a new meeting of the IFMIF-DONES Local Forum

The IFMIF-DONES project further consolidated its institutional backing this Wednesday during the 4th IFMIF-DONES Local Forum, held at the Palacio de Quinta Alegre with the participation of key public administrations, social agents, and entities from Granada’s economic and scientific ecosystem. 
 
During the meeting, the Acting Director of IFMIF-DONES Spain, Moisés Weber, delivered a comprehensive overview of the project’s current status, highlighting an overall very positive evolution and the achievement of the main planned milestones. In his remarks, Weber underlined the growing international interest in the DONES programme, reflected in the engagement of new countries, as well as the significant increase in staff and the imminent start of construction works next summer.
 
The meeting was attended by representatives from Granada City Council, the Government Sub-delegation in Granada, the Regional Government of Andalusia, the University of Granada, the Provincial Council of Granada, Escúzar City Council, the Chamber of Commerce, the Confederation of Granada Employers, CITAI, trade unions CCOO and UGT, PSOE Granada, VOX, the Parque de las Ciencias, Andalucía TRADE and Fundación AI, demonstrating the cross-cutting and strategic nature of IFMIF-DONES for regional development.
 
Throughout the meeting, the strong institutional support for the project from the Government of Spain and the Regional Government of Andalusia was reaffirmed, both key stakeholders in its promotion and consolidation. In this context, the Mayor of Escúzar announced the granting of the construction license, a decisive step forward for the progress of the infrastructure.
For its part, the University of Granada, through its representative Blanca Biel, confirmed that the use of the plot adjacent to the DONES site will be authorised for temporary and auxiliary facilities during the construction phase, thereby facilitating operational development.
 
The meeting also included a moment of institutional remembrance in which the participating authorities dedicated a few words to Councilor José Carlos Gómez Villamandos, who recently passed away, highlighting his firm commitment and his decisive support for the IFMIF-DONES project throughout his term.
 
The meeting highlighted the strength of the institutional and social ecosystem supporting IFMIF-DONES, as well as the alignment of all stakeholders involved in advancing in a coordinated manner towards the implementation of a world-class scientific infrastructure in the field of fusion energy.
