CDTI launches a Preliminary Market Consultation to analyse two Technology Challenges posed by the IFMIF-DONES España consortium

On 23 December last, the resolution of the director general of the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI) was published on the public sector procurement platform-E.P.E. (CDTI) for the Preliminary Market Consultation (PMC) to determine the degree of development of technology and materials in high-intensity hadron accelerators and experimental target systems and irradiation test areas using integrated technological validators.

The call is open to natural or legal persons, public and/or private, individually or in joint ventures. The submission of several proposals by the same person, either individually or jointly with others, will be accepted. The next 18th of January will take place the CPM Conference. Here you can find the agenda and register.

The purpose of this CPM is to promote the participation of economic operators active in the market in the presentation of innovative proposals aimed at responding to the needs of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium with respect to two technological challenges:
   – CHALLENGE 1: Integrated Technology Validator for Accelerator Systems
   – CHALLENGE 2: Integrated Technological Validator of Lithium Target and Test Systems

It is intended that, based on the results of the CPM, the CDTI and the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium will have information to define the technical specifications that will improve the definition and scope of the possible projects to be tendered.

This JPC could result in a significant investment aimed at advancing the technological developments necessary for the implementation of the IFMIF-DONES Project and its results could be used for other large scientific facilities.

About CDTI
The CDTI-E.P.E. is a Public Business Entity, under the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which promotes innovation and technological development of Spanish companies. Thus, the objective of the CDTI is to contribute to the improvement of the technological level of Spanish companies through the development of the following activities:
– Technical-economic evaluation and granting of public aid for innovation through subsidies or partially reimbursable aid for R&D projects developed by companies.
– Management and promotion of Spanish participation in international technological cooperation programmes.
– Promotion of international business technology transfer and technological innovation support services.
– Support for the creation and consolidation of technology-based companies.

About IFMIF-DONES
The International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – Demo Oriented NEutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) is a unique scientific infrastructure in the world where materials to be used in future fusion power plants will be tested, validated and qualified as DEMO (a prototype demonstration fusion reactor). In relation to this international project, in December 2017, Fusion for Energy (F4E) positively assessed the joint Spanish and Croatian proposal to locate IFMIF-DONES in Granada.
The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) included IFMIF-DONES in its 2018 Roadmap as a project within the energy area, and it currently appears in the 2021 Roadmap. IFMIF-DONES thus becomes one of ESFRI’s key infrastructures, positioning itself as a relevant strategic infrastructure for scientists in Europe in the area of energy research and innovation.
IFMIF-DONES will therefore be a unique international facility. In addition to its relevance for the development of fusion as an energy source, it will also be very relevant in other areas of research and knowledge that will benefit from its technology… such as medicine, particle physics, basic physics studies, industry… All this in a planet that is increasingly committed to sustainable development and the use of clean, safe and efficient energy.

The IFMIF-DONES project is an initiative of the National Fusion Laboratory of the Energy, Environmental and Technological Research Centre (CIEMAT) currently being developed by the IFMIF-DONES Spain Consortium.

CIEMAT is the Public Research Organisation attached to the Ministry of Science and Innovation that has led the design of this facility from the beginning and is currently financing the construction of some buildings and laboratories in Escúzar (Granada).

The IFMIF-DONES España Consortium is a research entity shared equally between the General State Administration and the Autonomous Community of Andalusia.
