IFMIF-DONES, at the heart of Madrid

From 4 to 18 December, the National Museum of Natural Sciences of the CSIC is hosting the exhibition “Spain and Fusion Energy”, an outreach showcase created by CIEMAT to bring to the general public the meaning, progress and potential of fusion energy, as well as the role Spain will play in its development in the coming years.
The exhibition clearly and accessibly explains what nuclear fusion is, how it can be reproduced on Earth, and the advantages it offers as a clean, safe and virtually inexhaustible energy source. It also highlights the importance of IFMIF-DONES, the future international scientific facility to be built in Escúzar (Granada), which will enable testing and selection of materials for future fusion reactors.
Visitors will also learn about Spain’s more than 40-year trajectory in fusion research and the relevance of the DONES-PRIME project, led by CIEMAT and co-funded by European funds. This project has enabled the start of construction of the first buildings and laboratories required for IFMIF-DONES, as well as site studies and the development of supporting infrastructure, such as the LITEC lithium loop.
During the exhibition’s installation on the Museum’s outdoor esplanade, it will offer informative panels, graphic content, and outreach resources to help visitors understand why fusion is considered one of the great scientific and technological commitments of this century.
