José Aguilar brings the IFMIF-DONES project closer to young residents at Colegio Mayor Albayzín
The Coordinator of the IFMIF-DONES Technical Office, José Aguilar Medina, gave a talk at Colegio Mayor Albayzín (Granada), where the young residents learned about the importance of the IFMIF-DONES project as part of the roadmap of the European Fusion Program. This roadmap depends on the aforementioned project to obtain the necessary data about critical materials to construct feasible fusion reactors by mid-21st century.
During his speech, Aguilar described the foreseen timeline up to the feasibility of fusion energy. This calendar has as its first milestone, in this new phase, the operation of ITER in 2025, the operation with an effective performance of IFMIF-DONES by 2033 approximately, leading up to the DEMO phase in 2050 with the production of electricity. It was explained that the aim is to replicate in fusion power plant what occurs in the Sun. In order words ‘to generate an environment in which particles collide creating other elements and releasing energy that can be used’.
This talk about the IFMIF-DONES project, besides having the aim to spread the word about this initiative, which is essential for the future of fusion energy, seeks to encourage the interest of young people for science and research. Previous experience in similar activities has shown that there is a favourable and positive response by the attendees, promoting research vocation.
