On May 12, the ‘DONES Day Expo Osaka’ was held at the Spain Pavilion in the Japanese city of Osaka. The event provided the stage for the official signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) by the Japanese State Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Atsushi Nonaka. The signing ceremony was attended by Eva Ortega-Paíno, Secretary General for Research at the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. The agreement was subsequently signed on May 19 by Minister Diana Morant in Escúzar (Granada).
The Osaka signing was also attended by Ángel Ibarra, Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, and José Aguilar, Head of the DONES Programme Management Office, along with a delegation of Granada-based companies led by the Industry Office and Ineustar, in collaboration with CDTI.

The event served to strengthen the ties of cooperation between IFMIF-DONES and Japan, anticipating Japan’s future participation in the project. It also provided an international platform to showcase Spain’s scientific, technological, and industrial capabilities in the field of fusion energy. As part of the event, the CDTI organized the “Japan-Spain DONES Technology Workshop,” featuring six Spanish speakers who presented the strengths of the national industry in key areas of cooperation related to IFMIF-DONES.
During the trip, the Granada delegation visited the LIPAc (Linear IFMIF Prototype Accelerator) in Rokkasho, Japan — the prototype of the accelerator to be built in Escúzar. They also toured the facilities of Kyoto Fusioneering Ltd. in Tokyo.
This visit represented a significant opportunity to strengthen technological collaboration between Spain and Japan in the fusion energy sector and to explore potential industrial synergies for the future.
