IFMIF-DONES hosts a international workshop on AI for fusion facilities
Posted on |

The international workshop “Artificial Intelligence for Fusion Facilities: Challenges, Synergies and Opportunities” is being held on 29–30 September at the Citai site in Escúzar (Granada). It was an intense two days with more than 20 presentations and 15 experts who demonstrated how artificial intelligence is transforming fusion facilities, as well as the challenges we still face. On the closing day, members of the IFMIF-DONES team presented the prototypes already installed in the facility and shared with attendees how they are applying AI in the MuVacCas project.
In addition to IFMIF-DONES, representatives from ITER, Fusion for Energy, Fundación IA Granada, UGR-DaSCI, T-Systems, Safran, Plain Concepts, HI Iberia and Quantia/UGR participate.
During the sessions, topics such as real-time data acquisition and analysis for predictive maintenance, cybersecurity, and energy management were addressed. Additionally, intelligent control systems and AI-assisted robotics for operations and maintenance, as well as avatars and “virtual engineers” applied to design and supervision processes, were discussed.
The workshop also includes presentations on business automation and integration, including the use of AI-based agents for document management and administrative processes, digital twins and simulations to optimize complex systems, and AI applications in manufacturing, quality control, and supply chain optimization.
With the presence of specialists from different disciplines and backgrounds, the workshop reaffirms the role of Granada and the IFMIF-DONES project as an international benchmark in science, technology, and fusion energy, helping to place Spain at the forefront of research in this field.
