From 28-30 January, Granada hosted the 32nd European Fusion Programme Workshop (EFPW32), organised by Eurofusion and the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium. Under the theme ‘Nuclear technology and nuclear physics for fusion power plants’, more than a hundred international experts met to explore materials, fuel cycle, reactor safety and the future of fusion power plants, among other issues.
EUROfusion Programme Director Gianfranco Federici participated in the sessions. ‘It is urgent to address the relevance of energy issues and understand whether fusion can be accelerated,’ Federici said. ‘The scientific community is trying to converge and present the result of the work being organised in Europe to make sure that fusion is ready to move forward further,’ he added. The Director of the IFMIF-DONES Consortium Spain, Ángel Ibarra, and the DONES Programme Manager, Philippe Cara, welcomed the audience and started the cycle of interventions. ‘All the feedback we are getting is that they are impressed by the progress IFMIF-DONES has made in the last two years. They are pleased that things are progressing in this project,’ said Ibarra.
Those attending the conference visited the IFMIF-DONES facilities in Citai (Escúzar), where they saw the first prototypes located in the UGR-DONES Research Centre.
