Granada hosts international meeting on safety and regulation in fusion energy facilities

From June 2 to 6, the city of Granada is hosting the Technical Meeting on Safety in Design, Safety Assessment, and Regulatory Activities to Facilitate the Future Development and Deployment of Fusion Facilities. The event is organized by the Government of Spain through the IFMIF-DONES project, in collaboration with the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) and CIEMAT, and under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The meeting brings together international experts—around 60 on-site participants and additional online attendees—from countries such as Canada, China, Egypt, Germany, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It will also feature representatives from key institutions including the IAEA, the European Commission, Fusion for Energy, and ITER.

This event aims to advance the global understanding of regulatory challenges faced by countries committed to deploying fusion as an energy source, with a focus on promoting harmonized and efficient processes.

The outcomes of the meeting will directly contribute to future IAEA technical publications, reinforcing Spain’s and IFMIF-DONES’ leadership in the global fusion landscape. Discussions will center around crucial topics such as safety in design, risk assessment, and licensing procedures—essential elements for the responsible development of this technology.

As global momentum grows around fusion as a clean and sustainable energy source, numerous experimental facilities and research centers are being developed. This technical meeting provides a platform for open dialogue, knowledge exchange, and progress toward robust and secure regulatory frameworks for future fusion infrastructure.
