Engineer Ángela García, recognised by the ‘Women in DONES’ collective

The ‘Women in DONES (WiD)’ collective has honoured Ángela García for contributing to fusion energy. In previous years, WiD has highlighted the careers of Susana Clement (2024) and Pilar Aranda and Yolanda Benito (2023).

Ángela García has worked as an engineer in the fusion field since the early 1990s, participating in one of the leading experimental facilities dedicated to fusion plasma physics in Spain: the TJ-II stellarator (CIEMAT). She was in charge of several subsystems of the TJ-II, from design to construction and final operation, such as the central cooling and vacuum systems and the vacuum systems of the Neutral Beam Injectors. She also contributed to the Breeding Blanket design group, drawing on her extensive engineering design experience. It is also worth mentioning her participation in the promotion of the Spanish candidacy for the construction of ITER in Vandellós, which finally culminated in the assignment of the European agency F4E to Spain (Barcelona).

In her technical-scientific career, she made significant contributions to the IFMIF and IFMIF-DONES projects from their inception until her retirement, working on different aspects of the design (RF-LIPAc cooling system, irradiation modules, purification facilities, among others), bringing Spanish industry closer to fusion R&D. She also led the creation and supervision of the ITER project in Spain. She also created and supervised key documentation for the IFMIF-DONES project, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project standards.

As a final contribution, she has played a key role in designing and procuring LITEC, the experimental facility for IFMIF-DONES lithium purification systems, recently installed in Escúzar, Granada.

The presentation of the sculpture created by the Granada artist Lola Moral, which accredits the distinction of the WiD collective, will take place soon.
