DONES Steering Committee holds meeting in Granada to review and agree important Programme and governance steps

The DONES Steering Committee, the body overseeing the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF-DONES) project, convened for its fourth meeting at the Palacio Quinta Alegre in Granada on October 16th. Representatives from 17 countries, along with representatives of the European Commission and international fusion energy bodies (EURATOM/EUROFusion/F4E), participated in the event to discuss critical developments and next steps in the programme.

Key sections of the agenda focused on the progress of the DONES Programme, including an ongoing update on essential governing documents. The Steering Committee agreed the proposed 2025 Work Programme, outlining future priorities for the development of the Neutron Source facility in Escúzar, Granada.

A critical part of the discussions was related to the ongoing update of the governance documents, including those associated to the host organisation responsibilities, intellectual property and procurement arrangements between the implementing agencies. Definition of committees to provide further technical expertise to the programme was also covered. These developments are vital for ensuring transparency and efficiency in the management of this large-scale international initiative.

International contributions were also discussed including information on recent outcomes from Italy and Euratom/Fusion for Energy (F4E). This also included updates from other potential international contributors like Germany, Japan, Slovenia and France interested in supporting the DONES programme, aiming to strengthen the international collaboration driving the project forward.

In the meeting it was also agreed Staša Skenžić to be reappointed as Chair of the DONES Steering Committee for the next two years as of March 2025.
