CIEMAT announces two employment contracts in engineering and technology for fusion energy

A call has been published to fill two engineering positions using an employment contract at the National Fusion Laboratory (LNF, fusion.ciemat.es) of the Centre for Energy, Environmental and Technological Research (CIEMAT). The LNF is the Spanish reference centre in the field of Nuclear Fusion.

We are looking for someone with a Bachelor + Master degree (300 ECTS) in Engineering or equivalent who wants to train and work in the Fusion Engineering Unit of the LNF, in the framework of international projects such as ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) or IFMIF-DONES (International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – DEMO Oriented NEutron Source) and in the TJ-II facility.

Nuclear fusion is the energy of the stars and its development on Earth will provide sustainable, CO2-free, intrinsically safe energy with sufficient potential to meet future energy demands. With this aim in mind, significant projects are being developed in which the LNF is involved. In addition, the laboratory carries out the scientific exploitation of the TJ-II stellarator, classified as one of the unique scientific and technological infrastructures in Spain.

The TJ-II is an experimental thermonuclear fusion device that has operated since 1998. It is located at the Ciemat facilities in Madrid. It is currently the second largest stellarator in operation in Europe.

ITER, currently under construction in Cadarache (France), will be the world’s largest tokamak to demonstrate nuclear fusion’s scientific and technological feasibility as a first step towards future electricity plants. LNF is involved in the engineering development of diagnostic systems for the operation of the device.

IFMIF-DONES, currently in the early stages of construction in Granada, is a neutron source to study the behaviour of materials that will form part of future nuclear fusion reactors under conditions similar to those they will have to withstand during reactor operation).
