Women in DONES (WiD), the group made up of women professionals involved in the DONES Programme, will present an award to Sara García Alonso next 9 October in recognition of her outstanding scientific career and her contribution to science outreach and the promotion of STEM careers among younger generations.
“Through Women in DONES, we wanted to recognise Sara García Alonso’s career for its extraordinary combination of scientific excellence, commitment to research and ability to inspire,” WiD said.
Sara García Alonso holds a PhD in Molecular Cancer Biology and Translational Research from the University of Salamanca. Since 2019, she has carried out her research at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), where she is involved in projects aimed at discovering new treatments for lung and pancreatic cancer. Her scientific career is complemented by an international and outreach dimension that has made her a leading figure in bringing science closer to society.
In November 2022, the European Space Agency (ESA) selected her as a member of its Astronaut Reserve, making her the first Spanish woman to receive this distinction. Since then, she has combined her scientific work with ESA’s training programme and extensive outreach activities, particularly aimed at encouraging girls and young people to take an interest in science and technology.
The recognition of Sara García Alonso adds to those previously presented to Yolanda Benito, Director General of CIEMAT; Pilar Aranda, former Rector of the University of Granada; Susana Clement, former Acting Head of the Broader Approach Department at Fusion for Energy; and Ángela García, researcher.
