Granada to host the world’s leading linear accelerator conference in 2028

IFMIF-DONES has strengthened its position within the international Big Science landscape through its participation in LINAC2026, the world’s leading conference on linear accelerators. Held biennially, its 33rd edition took place last August in Daejeon (South Korea).

The esDONES delegation included Manuel Jesús Gutiérrez, member of the conference editorial team; Rubén Lorenzo, who presented a poster on the IFMIF-DONES Machine Protection System; and Iván Podadera, Technical Director of the project, who delivered an invited talk on IFMIF-DONES.

Participation in LINAC2026 provided an opportunity to showcase key technological advances and further consolidate IFMIF-DONES’ role within the international accelerator community—an essential component of the future facility.

One of the highlights of the conference was the official announcement that Granada will host the next edition of the event, LINAC2028. During the closing session, the traditional symbolic handover of the “gavel” took place between the 2026 host city, Daejeon, and Granada.

This symbolic gesture, marking the transition between editions, was received by Iván Podadera, who will safeguard it over the next two years until the conference is held in Granada in 2028. The event will be organised by the team associated with IFMIF-DONES.

Granada’s designation as the host city for LINAC2028 represents a new milestone in IFMIF-DONES’ international projection and reinforces the city’s role as a strategic hub within the global ecosystem of Big Science and accelerator technology.
