DONES Steering Committee holds meeting in Granada to review and agree important Programme and governance steps

The DONES Steering Committee, the body overseeing the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility (IFMIF-DONES) project, convened for its fourth meeting at the Palacio Quinta Alegre in Granada on October 16th. Representatives from 17 countries, along with representatives of the European Commission and international fusion energy bodies (EURATOM/EUROFusion/F4E), participated in the event to discuss critical developments and next steps in the programme.

Ángel Ibarra participates in the IAEA’s fusion energy meeting in Rome

The director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, Ángel Ibarra, participated in the first ministerial meeting of the World Fusion Energy Group (WFEG) of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held in Rome on 6 November.

DONES Young Researchers Panel was held in Zagreb

The DONES Young Researchers Panel was held on Wednesday, 2 October 2024, at the European Commission Representation building in Croatia, located in Zagreb. At this meeting, young scientists from Croatia and Spain presented their experiences working on this prestigious project. The speakers were Kristina Tomić Luketić (Ruđer Bošković Institute), Toni Dunatov (Ruđer Bošković Institute), Daniel Miler (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Shipbuilding, University of Zagreb) and Antonio Moreno (IFMIF-DONES España Consortium).

IFMIF-DONES intensifies its international positioning at BSBF 2024

IFMIF-DONES played a major role at BSBF 2024, held in Trieste (Italy). This forum offered a unique opportunity to explore new partnerships, discover business opportunities and access high-impact projects. ‘Granada must be a capital of the Big Science industry’

IFMIF-DONES has all the potential to ‘make Granada a capital of the Big Science industry’. This was stated by José Aguilar, PMO Leader of the project, during the conference ‘Big Science and its economic impact on the environment’, organised by the Chamber of Commerce of Granada, the Granada Global agency and CASER.
The Mayoress of Granada, Marifrán Carazo welcomed the event, after which CERN’s Director of Technologies, José Miguel Jiménez, gave the conference ‘IFMIF-DONES and CERN: Common Destinations?’.

IFMIF-DONES, Plaza de España Award

The IFMIF-DONES Spain Consortium was one of the ten winners of this year’s XX edition of the Plaza de España Awards granted by the Spanish Government Delegation in Andalusia to organisations, institutions and individuals from the Andalusian community who have stood out in different social, cultural, sporting or scientific fields for the fulfilment, defence and dissemination of the democratic values contained in the Spanish Constitution, which this year commemorates its XLVI anniversary.

The Demarcation of Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla of the Association of Civil Engineers has awarded José Aguilar Medina, head of the Programme Management Office of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – Demo Oriented Neutron Source (IFMIF-DONES), as Engineer of the Year 2024, at a ceremony in Seville in front of almost a hundred attendees.

We took part in the 2nd Andalusian Artificial Intelligence Conference

‘Challenges of AI at IFMIF-DONES’ was the title of the presentation given at the 2nd Artificial Intelligence Congress of Andalusia by Rubén Lorenzo, coordinator of Control and Instrumentation Systems at IFMIF-DONES.

Inauguration of the sculpture of the Stellarator TJ-II at the Science Park

A reproduction of the TJ-II sterallator stars in the hall of the Macroscopio building in the Science Park. The sculpture, designed by the Dutch artist Rick van Meel, was inaugurated by the Director of the Science Park, Luis Alcalá; the Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, Ángel Ibarra; the Deputy Regional Minister for Educational Development and Vocational Training of the Andalusian Regional Government, Pablo Quesada; and the CIEMAT representative, Teresa Estrada. Representatives of different institutions and organisations also attended the inauguration ceremony.

IFMIF-DONES, in the Course for Scientific Animators of the UGR and the Science Park

IFMIF-DONES will form part of the content to be covered by students from the Universidad de Granada (UGR)participating in the Science Animation Course that takes place at the Parque de las Ciencias every year.

IFMIF-DONES brings its scientific know-how to the service of the European Cultural Capital

The IFMIF-DONES España Consortium has decided to contribute its scientific knowledge to Granada’s bid for the Capital of Culture. The Mayoress, Marifrán Carazo, and the director of the Consortium, Ángel Ibarra, have signed the Manifesto of adhesion to the project ‘Granada European Capital of Culture 2031’, promoted by the City Council.
