European Commission invests €202 Million via F4E in the IFMIF-DONES

The European Commission, through Fusion for Energy (F4E), has approved an investment of €202 million for the construction and commissioning of the IFMIF-DONES particle accelerator located in Escúzar (Granada, Spain). This represents approximately 25% of the total cost of the project.

The Andalusian Government approves €100 million payment for IFMIF-DONES

The Governing Council of the Andalusian Government has authorised the advance payment of an exceptional grant amounting to €99.87 million to finance the foundations and construction of the primary structures of the building that will house the IFMIF-DONES particle accelerator in Escúzar (Granada).

IFMIF-DONES and CSN agree on a roadmap for the licensing of the facility

The Spanish Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) held a liaison committee meeting with representatives of the International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility – DEMO Oriented Neutron Source (IFMIF-DONES) project. This initiative aims to become a unique scientific infrastructure worldwide, designed to test materials for future fusion reactors, contributing to the safe development of fusion energy.

Ángel Ibarra, Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, and Luis Monasterio, Senior Materials Scientist at IFMIF-DONES, attended the first Technical Meeting organised by the IAEA on tritium breeding blankets.

IFMIF-DONES hosts a international workshop on AI for fusion facilities

The international workshop “Artificial Intelligence for Fusion Facilities: Challenges, Synergies and Opportunities” is being held on 29–30 September at the Citai site in Escúzar (Granada).
In addition to IFMIF-DONES, representatives from ITER, Fusion for Energy, Fundación IA Granada, UGR-DaSCI, T-Systems, Safran, Plain Concepts, HI Iberia and Quantia/UGR participate.

IFMIF-DONES featured in Bankinter Innovation Foundation report on fusion energy

“Fusion Energy. An Energy Revolution Underway. From Scientific Breakthrough to Industrial Deployment” is the title of the latest report published by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation.
The document originates from the Fusion Energy Forum held last June, where Ángel Ibarra, Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, participated in a panel of international experts.

Ángel Ibarra, Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, participated in the closing session of the 18th European Congress on Advanced Materials and Processes – FEMS EUROMAT 2025, held in Granada (Spain) from September 14–18, 2025.

Moisés Weber, Deputy Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, participated in the summer course “Transforming Energy: Modular/Advanced Reactors and the Path Toward Nuclear Fusion”, held at the Menéndez Pelayo International University and promoted by the ENSA Chair of Advanced Technologies.

IFMIF-DONES at the 38th National Conference on Chemical Engineering

“Leading society toward a sustainable future” was the theme of the 38th National Conference on Chemical Engineering, organised by the University of Granada from July 9 to 11. José Aguilar, PMO Leader at IFMIF-DONES, took part in the roundtable discussion “Energy and the Future: Chemical Engineering in the Energy Economy.”

Thesis on medical radioisotope production at IFMIF-DONES successfully defended

“Isotope Production in DONES: Exhaustive analysis of different isotopes and preliminary design of their industrial production” is the title of the thesis defended on July 7 by Elena López Melero. The work, supervised by A. Javier Praena Rodríguez (University of Granada) and Eduardo Romero Sanz (CIEMAT), received the highest distinction from the examination board.

DISSEMINATION

“Estela” takes off toward the Goya Awards

“Estela” is making significant progress in its bid for a nomination at the 2026 Goya Awards. This animated short film, produced by Rokyn Animation and Grupo ADM, and directed and written by Manuel Sicilia, is supported by IFMIF-DONES in collaboration with the University of Granada, the Granada City Council, the Granada Provincial Council, the Granada Chamber of Commerce, the Escúzar City Council, and CanalSur.

Rafael Esteban


Rafael Esteban (Granada, 1975) holds a Master’s degree in Integrated Management Systems and is a PhD candidate in Civil Engineering at the University of Granada. He joined the project in November 2020 at the University of Granada, where he carried out economic-financial and administrative management tasks during the preparatory phase of IFMIF-DONES. Since February 20, 2023, he has been the Manager of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, responsible for administrative, economic-financial, legal, and human resources matters. His duties include ensuring budget execution, proper application of public procurement regulations, personnel management, and liaising with governing and oversight bodies.
