IFMIF-DONES marks a historic milestone with the laying of its foundation stone and the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Japan and Spain

The IFMIF-DONES scientific project experienced a historic day that will remain engraved in the memory of international science and technology. On a day full of symbolism, the first stone of the IFMIF-DONES particle accelerator was laid, a unique infrastructure in the world for its type, and at the same time the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between Japan and Spain was formalized, a very relevant document since it expresses Japan’s intention to contribute to the DONES Program.

The DONES Steering Committee is pleased to announce that Japan has joined Spain and Croatia in the DONES Programme

The DONES Steering Committee, the governing body overseeing the development of the Programme, is pleased to announce the successful completion of its 5th meeting, held on 20 May 2025 at the Centro Federico García Lorca in Granada. This significant event brought together representatives from 17 countries, EURATOM, and international fusion energy organisations (EUROfusion and F4E) to discuss the progress and plans of the DONES Programme.

The Japanese Government signs its participation in IFMIF-DONES in Osaka

On May 12, the ‘DONES Day Expo Osaka’ was held at the Spain Pavilion in the Japanese city of Osaka. The event provided the stage for the official signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) by the Japanese State Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Atsushi Nonaka

The European Commission’s Expert Group on Fusion recommends the development of IFMIF-DONES

The Fusion Expert Group (FEG) supports the development of an EU Fusion Strategy, which is expected to be published in conjunction with the proposed Euratom Research and Training Programme for 2028-2032. This FEG Opinion Paper considers fusion a sustainable energy source and recommends accelerating its commercialisation.

Granada hosts international meeting on safety and regulation in fusion energy facilities

From June 2 to 6, the city of Granada is hosting the Technical Meeting on Safety in Design, Safety Assessment, and Regulatory Activities to Facilitate the Future Development and Deployment of Fusion Facilities. The event is organised by the Government of Spain through the IFMIF-DONES project, in collaboration with the Nuclear Safety Council (CSN) and CIEMAT, and under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Meeting on nuclear fusion at the Italian embassy in Spain

On 9 April, the Italian embassy in Spain hosted the meeting ‘Nuclear fusion and challenges for the decarbonisation of the planet’. Organised by the scientific attaché, Sergio Scopetta, the event aimed to highlight the scientific cooperation between Italy and Spain, as well as the importance of clean energies in contributing to the planet's decarbonization.

IFMIF-DONES and CERN strengthen their scientific-technical collaboration

A delegation from IFMIF-DONES recently visited CERN, within the framework of the two scientific organisations’ existing collaboration. The meetings were to deepen aspects of safety design and the development of standard technologies.

Institutional visit to the UGR-DONES Research Center

The rector of the University of Granada, Pedro Mercado, and the Councillor for University, Research and Innovation of the Junta de Andalucía, José Carlos Gómez Villamandos, have visited the UGR-DONES research centre, located in Escúzar, in an event that was also attended by Ángel Ibarra Sánchez, director of IFMIF-DONES Spain, and the subdelegate of the Government in Granada, José Antonio Montilla Martos, among other authorities.

The IFMIF-DONES España Consortium took part in the 16th International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC’25), held in Taipei (Taiwan), one of the most important global events in the field of particle accelerators.

The Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, Ángel Ibarra, participated on June 5–6 in the Future Trends Forum dedicated to fusion energy, under the title “Fusion Forward: Powering a Clean Energy Future”, organised by the Bankinter Innovation Foundation.

The director of the DONES Xcitech School, Blanca Biel, makes a very positive balance of the third edition held between April 6 and 11 in Dubrovnik (Croatia): “This edition has been very special for us. For the first time we left Granada and held the school in Dubrovnik, and the experience could not have been more positive”.

Young researchers show interest in fusion opportunities

Moisés Weber, Deputy Director of the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, took part in the Opportunities Day for Young Researchers in Fusion, held on June 19 at the Faculty of Education of UNED in Madrid (Spain). CDTI, CIEMAT, INEUSTAR, and Induciencia organised the event.

First PhD Thesis Defended as a Result of CIEMAT–UGR Collaboration for the Development of IFMIF-DONES

With the satisfaction reflected on her face in this photo, Irene Álvarez Castro received the highest grade for her thesis defence, marking the first doctoral thesis resulting from the collaboration between CIEMAT and the University of Granada (UGR) for the development of IFMIF-DONES.

The ‘Women in DONES’ (WiD) collective is highly active. Periodically, the scientists, engineers and researchers who make up the group are very active. Despite the difficulty of working in work centres located in different locations, the WiDs coordinate to maximise their presence at multiple events. A DONES delegation visits the ESS scientific facility in Sweden

Within the framework of the project DONES_ConP1, a delegation from DONES, composed of José Aguilar, Iván Podadera, Antonio Moreno, and Pierre Gavouyere-Lasserre, visited the European Spallation Source (ESS) scientific facility in Lund, Sweden, on June 25 and 26.

A micrograph to reflect Spanish DNA in the European nuclear fusion field

“In the microstructure revealed by the ion etching of the European reference material for the development of magnetic confinement nuclear fusion, EUROFER97, a microscopic signature has been inscribed, as if cut with the precision of a diamond. It bears the names and symbols of three key players in Europe’s fusion effort, all with a strong Spanish DNA: CIEMAT and its National Fusion Laboratory, the IFMIF-DONES project and the international school of fusion science and technology, DONES Xcitech”.

The DONES Runners Team makes its mark in popular races

The DONES Runners Team, formed by workers and members of the IFMIF-DONES project, continues to establish itself as a benchmark of sport, fellowship and science in motion. During the last months, its members have actively participated in different popular races in Granada, taking with them the name of the scientific infrastructure to each goal crossed.

Aida Padial


Aida Padial (Granada, 1988) holds a degree in Business Administration and Foreign Trade. She is part of the Programme Management Office, within the Communications area. One of her main responsibilities is to coordinate and support the organization of conferences, workshops, and meetings that are an essential part of IFMIF-DONES’s institutional presence.
