Granada hosts the 32nd European Fusion Programme Workshop

From 28-30 January, Granada hosted the 32nd European Fusion Programme Workshop (EFPW32), organised by Eurofusion and the IFMIF-DONES España Consortium. Under the theme ‘Nuclear technology and nuclear physics for fusion power plants’, more than a hundred international experts met to explore materials, fuel cycle, reactor safety and the future of fusion power plants, among other issues.

Pre-commercial Public Procurement contracts launched to validate fusion energy systems and materials

On 13 January, the contracts resulting from the Pre-commercial Public Procurement (PCP) of R&D services for the development of innovative solutions in the field of validation of systems and materials in fusion energy, managed by the CDTI with the collaboration of the IFMIF-DONES Spain Consortium, were launched. This project is co-financed by the CDTI and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the 2021-2027 programme.

Kick-off of the E4XTREM project for the development of key technologies in nuclear fusion

The Kick-off Meeting of the E4XTREM project, a pioneering initiative in the study and validation of regenerative envelope technologies for magnetic fusion reactors, was held on 12 March. This ambitious project brings together leading companies and research centres in the sector: Esteyco, AVS, EAI, CIEMAT, Tekniker and esDONES.

Conference on the opportunities and challenges of nuclear fusion for Spanish industry

The Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) of the Polytechnic University of Valencia organized the workshop ‘Nuclear fusion: technological challenges and opportunities for Spanish industries’ on 25 March. UPV-Innovation, IFMIF-DONES, CIEMAT and CDTI collaborated in the workshop.

The Industry Office was created to promote the industrial sector linked to Big Science in Granada

The IFMIF-DONES España Consortium, the University of Granada, the Astrophysics Institute of Andalusia-CSIC, the Granada Chamber of Commerce and INEUSTAR have signed the creation of an initiative in the form of an association to work to generate an industrial ecosystem linked to the large science sector in Granada.

Croatian delegation visit to review Croatia’s contribution to the IFMIF-DONES project

On 25 February, a bilateral workshop took place in Escúzar (Granada) to review the initial version of the Procurement Agreement documentation defining the technical and management requirements for Croatia’s contribution to the IFMIF-DONES project. IFMIF-DONES hosts pioneering research into the design and optimisation of fusion facilities, as published in the scientific journal MDPI. The results of this paper demonstrate the existing synergy between deep learning models and differentiable programming, offering a promising collaboration between physicists and computer scientists to improve the design of future fusion power plants.

The ‘Women in DONES (WiD)’ collective has honoured Ángela García for contributing to fusion energy. In previous years, WiD has highlighted the careers of Susana Clement (2024) and Pilar Aranda and Yolanda Benito (2023).

‘DONES’, a rap to transmit the energy of fusion to the younger generations

To transmit the energy of fusion to new audiences. This is the goal of the collective ‘Women in DONES’ (WiD). And they have achieved it through music. Thanks to the collaboration of singer, rapper, and composer Sandra Quero Alba (sandra333sb), with the production of Bezea, the song ‘DONES’ was created.

Workshop held for the design of the VATIST prototype

On 18 and 19 February a workshop was held in Granada which brought together the IFMIF DONES Consortium, CDTI and the DONES TCO Joint Venture, the successful bidder of Lot 2 (VATIST): experimental target systems and irradiation test areas.

Coinciding with the ‘Day of Women and Girls in Science’, the animated short film ‘Estela’, promoted by the IFMIF-DONES Spain Consortium and other public-private entities, was presented.

The Rodríguez-Acosta Foundation awards us its Medal of Honour

The plenary session of the Board of Trustees of the Rodríguez-Acosta Andalusian Public Foundation has unanimously agreed to award the Institution’s Medal of Honor for the year 2024 to the IFMIF DONES España Consortium.

IFMIF-DONES will host two large-format sculptures by Miguel Moreno Romera

Two large sculptures by the artist Miguel Moreno will be placed on deposit in the IFMIF-DONES buildings in Escúzar. This is stated in the agreement signed today between the Rector of the University of Granada and Miguel Moreno Romera, one of Granada’s most outstanding contemporary sculptors.

Fostering scientific vocations in the rural world

The 1st Temple Science Fair was inaugurated with the attendance of municipal representatives from Escúzar, Ventas de Huelma and Ácula, Agrón, La Malaha, Chimeneas, Cacín, Jayena and Cúllar Vega, as well as the IFMIF-DONES Spain Consortium, Industry Office, Granada Chamber of Commerce and Ineustar. Dozens of schoolchildren have participated in the organised activities, which will continue until tomorrow.

Interview with Alberto Ramírez


Alberto Ramírez (Andújar, Jaén, Spain, 1981) holds a degree in Computer Science Engineering from the University of Granada (2004) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Granada (2023). He is currently in charge of the IT Section of IFMIF-DONES.
