Key step in the IFMIF-DONES project: Approval of the Agreement to establish the Consortium that will boost Granada’s candidacy

December has been a key month for the future of the IFMIF-DONES particle accelerator project in Granada. The central Government and the Junta de Andalucía approved the signing of the agreement between the Spanish Government and the Regional Government to establish the Consortium that will support Spain’s candidacy and the construction of the scientific infrastructure ‘International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility -Demo Oriented Neutron Source’ (IFMIF-DONES) and the management of R&D related projects. It is a decisive administrative step, prior to the formalization of the consortium, which will be 50% owned by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and by the Ministry of Economic Transformation, Industry, Knowledge and Universities of the Junta de Andalucía.

Rafael Rodríguez, Co-founder and CTO of Seven Solutions

'Many particle accelerators are already using our timing solutions. In a remarkable way, other key facilities are in the field of Astrophysics and telescopes Arrays'

Seven Solutions has a broad experience in large international scientific infrastructures. Its synchronising systems are part of over 60 particle colliders in the world, including the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. Founded in 2006, the company was dedicated to real-time video surveillance systems. Seven Solutions has been a fundamental actor in constituting the Granada candidacy to host IFMIF-DONES. Its co-founder and CTO analyzes in this interview the role that the company's technology can play in Escúzar's future particle accelerator.

DONES-PreP reviews its first year of activity at the Second General Assembly

Last November 10 and 11, members of the 16 international entities involved in the DONES-PreP project participated in its Second General Assembly. This European project is currently developing the preparatory phase for the construction of the IFMIF-DONES particle accelerator in Escúzar, Granada. At this two-day meeting, the participants analysed the lines of work developed in the past year and the milestones to achieve in its second year. Besides the General Assembly, the project also organised its two high-level meetings to discuss key aspects for the management of the European initiative, which had the aim to propose a management, governance, and funding model for IFMIF-DONES. The Council meeting took place on November 23. This body is responsible for monitoring the DONES-PreP project and for the approval of the latest results obtained during its implementation. The second Stakeholders Committee meeting of the project was held online on November 26.

IFMIF-DONES, a scientific infrastructure with priority for the European Union

In July 2018, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI), included IFMIF-DONES in its roadmap. This milestone was vital for the project and its construction in Granada, opening the door to the attraction of European funds. The inclusion of this project confirmed Granada as the location to implement one of the most ambitious European projects in fusion energy research.
